How to sell your platinum jewellery for cash

Taking your platinum to a jewellery store or pawn shop for a valuation feels so inconvenient and old-fashioned. And how can you be sure you’re being offered a fair price?

With Unlocket, you can handle it all from your sofa with the phone that’s already in your hand.

Once you’ve got your initial online valuation, you can send the piece for assessment using tracked, insured postage. In person, we can confirm the metal's purity and value, and account for any gemstones or brand marks.

We’ll then tell you the exact amount we'd pay, with the valuation and our commission clearly explained.

Posting your jewellery doesn't mean you’re committing to selling it. If you accept the final offer, we'll pay by bank transfer. If not, we'll send your piece back, insured and free of charge.

The types of platinum jewellery we buy

We’ll take all your platinum, whatever the form, age, brand, condition, or purity. Even if it’s only filled or plated with platinum.

We buy platinum wedding bands and engagement or eternity rings, and adjust the price for settings with diamonds or other gemstones. We’ll even value a plain, humble band without a famous maker’s mark.

We buy platinum necklaces, bracelets, and pendants, plus vintage and antique jewellery. We’ll look at second-hand platinum pieces in all sorts of conditions, even if it’s an earring without its matching pair or a chain with a broken clasp.

Platinum of any purity or colour

You might be familiar with the carat system for gold purity. Platinum uses a different scale: parts per thousand.

If you see a platinum purity mark of 950, it means the metal contains 95% platinum, with other metals making up the remaining 5%. A mark of 850 means the piece is 85% platinum, and so on.

We buy platinum regardless of its purity, even if your jewellery isn’t platinum’s recognisable white colour. We’ll work out exactly how much platinum your jewellery contains, and offer you a price based on that.

The setting matters too

It’s very common for platinum to be set with diamonds or other stones. You might also want to sell jewellery that combines platinum with white gold or silver.

We can still value pieces that mix precious metals or include stones; we just need to do it in person. Gemstone values are added during our in-person assessment, so aren't included in your online estimate.

Keep the piece together and make sure to include any certificates or original paperwork you’ve kept.

How we calculate a price for your platinum jewellery

A years-old receipt won’t reflect what you can expect if you sell your platinum for cash today. Your offer looks at the live market to work out how much your piece could be worth today.

Here's what we consider once it reaches us.

The platinum in the piece

We start with hallmarks, then use laboratory tools to see the metal's weight and purity, and what else it might be alloyed with. Understanding the exact composition tells us the exact value of platinum in your jewellery.

For example, a plain 10 g band made entirely from 950 platinum means 9.5 g of pure platinum. We price that platinum at the current market rate.

If there’s gold or silver in the alloy, we’ll price those as precious metals separately, also at the current market value.

Its value as a jewellery piece

The basic metal price is only part of the story. A designer's name, a particular collection, or an antique setting can all also impact the price. That’s why we consider the design, condition and demand for the piece.

An in-person assessment also lets us determine a fair price for inset diamonds and other gemstones. You get a price for your complete jewellery with its stones, rather than a metal-only figure.

The amount you can actually receive

We'll explain the valuation and our commission. The final price you see is exactly what you’ll receive. If the estimate changes after a physical, we'll tell you what accounts for the difference.

Getting the best price for your platinum jewellery starts with transparency. You'll have all the details before you decide to sell. You’re under no pressure and no obligation.

Is now a good time to sell platinum jewellery?

Yes, generally speaking, the platinum market is favourable to sellers. The decision comes down to whether today's offer is one you'd be happy to accept.

The market changes over time as platinum prices respond to supply and demand. While there are naturally ups and downs, the last couple of decades have shown a positive trend.

Interestingly, beyond jewellery, demand for platinum as a component in car manufacturing and other industries also influences the price. That gives the metal its own market, which is why rising gold prices won't necessarily describe what's happening to platinum.

Check out the chart below to compare today's platinum price with earlier periods. Prices can fall as well as rise, so waiting for the market to go up can lead to disappointment.

Remember, though, that this calculation only covers the platinum content of your piece. It can’t value gemstones, maker’s marks, brand name, or the design. This isn’t a final offer for your jewellery.

If stones or other materials contribute to the weight, but you don't know by how much, your calculator result will be less reliable.

Start a full valuation by sending some photos so we can assess the whole piece.

Broken, battered, or blemished? Send it our way

Over time and with wear, platinum can develop a softer, less shiny surface called a patina. It's a normal feature of used platinum jewellery, and doesn't detract from the metal’s value. You don’t need to polish it up for sale.

We also buy broken platinum jewellery. Damaged settings and pieces with missing stones still hold their price. Even if you've written something off as scrap, you can still sell the platinum for cash.

And sometimes there's nothing wrong with it. It might just be an old ring that no longer fits, or an inherited necklace that’s too formal for your look. Simply being unwanted is reason enough to consider selling.
