How to sell your ring for cash

An old repair can be hard to spot in a photo, a maker’s mark can be easy to misread, and we can only assess gemstones in person. But all that could change what we offer for your ring. That’s why we have a simple process.

  1. Get your online quote. We give you a broad estimated price based on the photos and details you’ve shared.
  2. Have your ring assessed. If the quote piques your interest, we assess the condition, purity, brand, and gemstones in person before making a final offer.
  3. Take it or leave it. If the price is right, we transfer you the cash. If not, we return your ring, tracked and insured.

You stay in control, and you’re never under any pressure or obligation to sell. You can see how the valuation works in detail before you start.

What makes your ring valuable?

How much is your ring worth? Quite a few factors come into play. For a plain band, its purity and weight tell us quite a lot. But if you add a stone, a fancy brand name, or a bit of history, things stop being so straightforward.

The metal in the band

If there’s precious metal in your ring, it’s definitely worth something.

If you’re unsure, we can check whether it’s gold, silver or platinum, its purity and how much precious metal it contains. That lets us use the current market price to work out what that content is worth.

Bear in mind, a chunky 10ct gold ring can contain less gold than a slimmer 18ct one. You also can’t draw conclusions about value just because one ring is white gold and another is yellow.

Any stones

Gemstones can certainly change the price of your ring. A plain wedding band may get most of its value from its metal. But if you want to sell an engagement ring, the stone might make up most of our offer.

But that pretty red stone isn’t necessarily a ruby, even if it looks like one. Photos can’t tell us enough about a stone’s identity or quality. That’s why we assess stones, including lab-grown diamonds and coloured gemstones like emeralds, in person before giving you a final price.

Its maker and design

A big name can make a big difference. A Tiffany or Cartier Trinity ring may have a market value way beyond its metal content. We assess the piece as a whole, looking at the design, craftsmanship, maker’s mark, and market demand.

Got the box or receipt? Great: photograph it. We’ll still assess your ring, but any details you share can help us identify what you have, and price it fairly.

Condition and history

We’ll assess jewellery in any condition. However, a worn setting, missing stone, or visible repair can affect your offer.

Its story can matter, too, and an antique ring might attract interest for its design or historical value. If you have paperwork that establishes provenance, share that with us.

Live ring price calculator (metal only)

Know your ring’s metal, purity, and weight? Pop them in below. Our calculator uses today’s live gold, silver, or platinum price to give you a rough idea of the metal’s value.

It’s not smart enough to value gemstones, the maker, or the design, though. So treat all outputs as a broad estimate.

The types of rings we buy

We’ll look at any and all ring designs. Your ring might fit two of these groups—an antique signet, say, or a wedding band set with diamonds—that’s fine. We’re not picky, but will assess the design for market demand.

Plain bands and signet rings

There’s nothing wrong with a ring that’s just a ring. A plain band may get its price from the metal; a signet could have an engraving or maker’s mark that bumps up its price.

Wedding, engagement and eternity rings

Wedding bands and eternity rings may be plain or set with stones, and we welcome both. If you need to sell an engagement ring, we’ll give you a fair price.

Gold, silver and platinum rings

We love buying gold, silver, and platinum rings, and the metal is a big part of the price we’ll offer. We can also accurately value pieces that combine different precious metals.

Diamond and gemstone rings

If you plan to sell a diamond ring, or one set with ruby or emerald, you want the best price for the stone as well as the metal. Our expert gemologists examine things like the cut, colour, and clarity before making a judgment.

Branded, vintage and antique rings

If your ring carries an authentic Graff, Chopard, or Bvlgari mark, that’ll certainly factor into the price. But an antique ring with a unique design doesn’t need a famous name to command a higher value.

Old, broken and inherited rings

Your old, inherited ring might have a missing stone or a band that no longer sits straight. That’s alright; we can assess broken and unwanted second-hand rings as-is. No need for repairs.

A ring not the only piece you’re thinking of getting rid of? You can sell other jewellery with Unlocket too.

From evaluation to the best price

How do you work out the best price for your ring? What you originally paid, or the current price per gram, only tells you so much about a ring. What you need to know is what someone might pay for the whole piece.

We start by testing and weighing the metal, and use today’s metal prices to work out its value. Then we price the stones and consider the maker or design. That in-person assessment could change your online estimate, so if it does, we’ll explain why.

We’ll present a transparent, easy-to-understand final offer, showing our commission and the amount you’d receive.

You can use that final number when you compare places to sell jewellery. Be sure to check what each buyer has included in their price, too.

Is now a good time to sell a ring?

Yes, if the time and price are right for you, now is the perfect time to sell.

Gold, silver and platinum prices move with the market, and over the past couple of decades, the markets for all precious metals have seen a positive trend. But what matters for you is today’s price, because that’s what we’ll use to value your ring.

The graph below puts today’s metal price in context. It can’t predict tomorrow’s price, though, and can’t tell you what a stone or a sought-after design might add, either.

Old, broken or simply unwanted?

Life happens. A ring gets bent or broken, a setting comes loose, or the metal becomes scratched or patinated over time. While a split band or damaged stone may affect the offer, the precious metal can still hold value.

Your ring doesn’t have to be pristine to get a decent resale price.

Sometimes nothing’s wrong with the old ring. It fits, it’s wearable, but you just never put it on. Maybe you inherited a second-hand ring that’s just not your style?

If it’s unwanted for whatever reason, you can ask for an estimate without deciding to sell. Curiosity costs you nothing.

Is Unlocket the best place to sell rings online?

There can be a lot going on in one small ring, so it’s only fair that you understand exactly why you’re receiving the quote you’re offered.

Here’s what helps you decide:

  • Start at home with photos and a free estimate. Keep the ring with you while you think about it.
  • Let us value the whole piece. We'll take a closer look at the stones and marks alongside the metal.
  • See how we reached the final offer. We show our commission and the amount you’d receive.
  • Say no if the price doesn’t suit you. We’ll return your ring free, tracked and insured.

We’re the buyer, so there’s no listing to manage, and no need to negotiate with chancers. We give you a number and leave the last word to you.

Why Unlocket is the best place to sell jewellery online

The best place to sell jewellery shouldn't expect you to be a jewellery expert to get a fair price.

Walking into a random shop wondering if you're about to say yes to the wrong number? No thanks. Decoding hallmarks and keeping one eye on the gold price? That should be our job.

Unlocket does the complicated bit. You show us what you've got, we work out what we're prepared to pay, and you decide if that price works for you.

And if you do sell? That's when an old piece can become something really meaningful. Jewellery you haven't worn in years could fund a weekend away, go towards something you've been saving for, or put money in your pocket for whatever matters more right now.

No bluffing. No pressure. No awkward haggling. No need to pretend you know more about jewellery than you do.

The old way to sell jewellery
  • You sell blind.

High-street buyers know the live metal price; you don't. Offers can run 10–40% of true value, working never shown.

  • The fees are foggy.

Deductions for “testing”, “handling” or “admin” mean the quote is rarely the number you actually get.

  • It travels at your risk.

Posted and prayed for, or handed across a stranger's counter with a paper ticket as your only proof.

  • You wait, or take store credit.

Cheques, IOUs, or credit you can only spend where you sold. Never cash in your account.
