Get a price for your gemstone jewellery in 60 seconds

Use our tool to get an estimated value for your jewellery in under a minute. Then get your gemstones valued in person.

No idea what the stone is? That’s fine; photograph your jewellery and share any details you do know. In 60 seconds, you’ll have an initial estimate based mostly on the precious metal in the setting.

Diamonds and other gemstones are the trickier bit, since a photograph can’t tell us enough about a stone to price it properly. To give you a full estimate of your jewellery’s value, our gemologists need to assess it in person.

Feel free to get an online quote so you have a number to think about. If you’re curious what you could get for the whole piece, send it for a full valuation.

How to sell your gemstone jewellery for cash

Jewellery store, pawn shop, auction house, or private online listing you manage yourself. They can all help get your piece sold. But they also bring appointments, long waiting times, awkward haggling, and strangers in your inbox looking to rip you off.

With Unlocket, you can avoid all those irritations and handle everything from home. We’ll give you a price that reflects the true value of your jewellery. No need to haggle; no pressure to sell.

Here’s what happens from photo to final offer:

  1. Take some clear photos. Show the front, back and hallmark, plus any chips, scratches or missing stones.
  2. Tell us whatever you know. A weight helps, but don’t worry if you’re not sure. Share any details you do have about the metal, gemstone, brand or paperwork.
  3. Get your first figure. An instant, online quote will give you a rough idea of what your piece might be worth.
  4. Send it in when you’re ready. Our gemologists assess the stones, then we make a final offer.

When you send your piece, you’re not committing to selling it. You don’t need to decide until you know the final figure you’d receive.

If you accept our offer, we pay by bank transfer. If you decline, we return your jewellery by tracked, insured postage. Free of charge, of course.

The types of gemstones we buy

We buy jewellery set with all kinds of gemstones, regardless of colour, sparkle, odd cuts, or cloudy stones.

Gemstones don’t always come with labels. You might have a certificate tucked into the box, a great aunt’s insistence that “it’s definitely a ruby”, or simply no idea which gem you’re looking at.

“Red stone in an old gold ring” is enough for us to get started, though. Our gemologists can use precision tools to find the exact answer and value.

That includes jewellery set with:

  • Natural and lab-grown diamonds
  • Blue, pink, yellow and other sapphires
  • Rubies and spinels
  • Emeralds and aquamarines
  • Opals, topaz, garnets and amethysts
  • Pearls and turquoise

Don’t see yours listed above? Send it anyway; we’ll still be able to quote you a price.

Working out a stone’s name is only the first step to assessing its value. Two sapphires of similar size can differ wildly once you start examining them properly. This is when factors like colour, condition, cut, and possible treatments all come into the picture.

Got a certificate, receipt, or old valuation report? Share a copy. An insurance valuation won’t tell you today’s resale price, but it could still contain useful details about your stone.

Don’t turn your loft upside down if you can’t find any paperwork, though. We can still examine the jewellery that’s in front of us and give you a fair price.

The jewellery types and metals we buy

We won’t just pay for the gemstone. We assess the value of your piece as a whole, so be sure to keep the gemstone in its setting. Its metal, maker, age and design may affect our offer.

Diamond rings might get a lot of attention, but we also buy stone-set necklaces, pendants, bracelets, bangles, brooches, charms and earrings. Even a lonely gem-set cufflink without its partner is welcome.

If the setting is precious metal, we’ll value it according to the current market price.

We buy silver, platinum and mixed-metal jewellery, along with white, yellow, rose and red gold. Gold carat can be 9ct (375), 14ct (585), 18ct (750), 22ct (916) or 24ct (999).

Hallmark worn away? Don’t squint: we have tools to confirm the exact metal and purity when the piece reaches us, including mixed metals.

If your piece is branded or antique, we’ll take that into consideration too, when calculating your final price.

How we value your gemstone jewellery

How much can you make selling your gemstone jewellery? There really is no way to tell until a professional has examined the actual piece.

For the precious metal in your jewellery, calculating a price is pretty straightforward. We use the stated weight, likely purity, and today's metal price to estimate its gold, silver, or platinum value.

Unfortunately, with gemstones, it’s not as simple as plugging numbers into an online calculator.

So what happens during a physical assessment? Our gemologist examines the stone to precisely figure out its identity, size, colour, clarity, cut, and condition, all of which will impact the resale price.

Some gemstones will have undergone treatments to change their appearance, which is also only obvious under the microscope.

Once we know the metal price and stone quality, we look at the item as a whole. We’re looking for things like a maker's mark, a sought-after brand, an unusual design, a certificate, or strong resale demand. They may mean we’ll pay more than the materials are worth on their own.

Your final offer shows:

  • The value of the complete jewellery piece
  • The commission we charge if you sell
  • The exact amount you would receive
  • Any reason the final figure differs from your online estimate

That transparency makes it easier for you to tell whether you’re getting the best price possible.

Is now a good time to sell gemstone jewellery?

Yes. Since precious-metal prices have broadly climbed over the past 20 years, even with ups and downs along the way, now is generally a pretty good time to offload old jewellery.

When it comes to gemstones, though, things aren’t as clear-cut as tracking a live market. You can’t price a ruby simply by multiplying today’s price per gram. Two very similar-looking stones might hold two very different values once you take a closer look.

To know whether it’s a good time to sell your piece, someone needs to inspect it and tell you its exact value today. Then you can decide whether that price is right for you.

  • 02 · GemstonesValued in personNo per-gram shortcut for a stone.
  • 03 · Your callYou decideJewellery or money, once you see the offer.

If you’re saving up for a holiday, new car, or just a really great night out, now might be the perfect time to sell.

Once you have the exact offer, you choose: would you rather have the jewellery or the money? If it’s the money, sell. If it’s the jewellery, keep it.

Live gemstone jewellery price calculator

Unfortunately, no online calculator can tell you how much your gemstones are worth. The calculator below does one thing: it checks what the precious metal in your jewellery could be worth today.

If your piece contains gold, silver or platinum, you’re in luck. You can enter the purity and weight in grams, and the calculator will apply the current metal price to give you a rough value.

The weight can prove a little tricky, though. If you’ve weighed the whole piece, including the gemstone, your result will be off.

Don’t try taking your ring apart; just treat the number as a rough guide.

The calculator also can’t account for a Cartier brand or a chip in an opal, and it can’t price the gemstone, so take its output with a large pinch of salt.

Used, broken, unwanted, or written off as scrap?

Life wears us all down, but that doesn’t mean your chipped stone is worthless. A bent claw, snapped chain, scratched setting, or missing earring doesn’t mean you can no longer sell your jewellery, either.

Damage can change the value. It doesn’t wipe it out entirely.

Please don’t pay for repairs or aggressive cleaning before checking with Unlocket. We’ll buy jewellery in pretty much any state of disrepair.

We also take plated or filled jewellery. Even if the setting contains less precious metal, it still holds value. Plus, the gemstone, brand, and complete design may still push the price up.

And if your piece is perfectly wearable and just unloved? That works, too. Perhaps it was an inherited piece or gift you never wear, or a design you’ve outgrown. Why not sell it for cash you’ll actually use?
